The activities of the Sustainable Food Citizen Week

Sustainable Food Citizen Week provides an opportunity to understand the relationship between food habits and cross-cutting aspects such as the climate emergency, local economic development, culture, politics, social rights and health. A week dedicated to citizens, in which you will achieve knowledge, reflection and debate about the main issues of the following activities.

  • Opening of the temporary exhibition “Feeding Barcelona, city, supply and health"

    Feeding the population has always been a concern for cities. It has been a decisive factor in their relationship with surrounding territories, in the centuries-long evolution of technologies for obtaining food produce and in the conditions under which men and women have been able to feed themselves and stay alive. 

    From the outset, one of the main tasks of the Consell de Cent, the Barcelona municipal institution created in 1249, was to guarantee food supplies and ensure food safety. Since then, the city's government has strived to guarantee good quality food supplies, because it has been directly responsible for them, provided support in doing so or has sought alternatives to the insufficient actions of other authorities.  

    The municipal government's intervention continues today, with Mercabarna, Barcelona and the Western Mediterranean's great food store, and the city's network of municipal markets. This long history of decisive municipal involvement in the food supply chain is historically unique to Barcelona, with no similar situation in most other European cities.   
    The exhibition is open from 15 October 2021 to 15 October 2022.

    Presentation of the exhibition “Feeding Barcelona, city, supply and health”, organised by the Museu d’Història de Barcelona (MUHBA).

    One area of research and dissemination for the MUHBA in recent years has centred on the study of food and people’s health. The “Feeding Barcelona” project has paid particular attention to the institutions and policies which have made it possible to meet the basic life needs of people throughout history, and, as a consequence, the sustainable existence of the city itself. 
     

  • The medieval roots of Catalan gastronomic heritage

    During the 14th and 15th centuries, Catalan cooking achieved a level of excellence that was internationally acknowledged. Its aims were to obtain complex flavours through combining fine seasonings, to mask the natural qualities of the food and create sophisticated and attractive dishes. The conquest of Naples by Alfonso the Magnanimous and popes Calixtus III and Alexander VI, both from the Borja family, contributed to increased contact with Italy, from where its fame spread to the rest of Western Europe. Italian creations were praised by the expert gourmets of the day and were gathered across four cookery books: Llibre de Sent Soví [The Book of Saint Sovin], Llibre d’aparellar de menja [Book of Food Pairings], Llibre de totes maneres de potatges [Book of all Kinds of Stews] and Llibre del coc [Book of the Cook].

    The start off the week will be a chorus, musical, and participative. Having their say will be the real heroes of sustainable food, those involved in the food cycle: the fishermen, drivers, chefs, farmers, ranchers, market vendors. The speech will be intertwined with the large mechanical orchestra of Cabo San Roque, distributed in the form of a sound mural in front of the City Hall, along with the active participation of the public, in a collective musical creation composed especially for the occasion. A show that highlights all the participants behind the food supply network and gives them a voice.

    Let’s create better food use networks in the city's neighbourhoods. Presentation of the Guide for creating a community better food use network

    Discover the Pont Alimentari [Food Bridge]. Less waste, more solidarity

    Presentation of the Pont Alimentari [Food Bridge] project, promoted by Rezero and the Resources Bank Foundation since 2015, with the aim of reducing food waste in the retail, catering and restaurant food-distribution sector, creating a network for interaction and better food use among donor companies and recipient organisations supporting vulnerable groups.

    Presentation of “Repoblem” [Repopulating]

    “Repoblem” [Repopulating] is a social network initiative to connect towns and villages suffering from depopulation with people who are keen to live in those villages.
    “Repoblem” disseminates campaigns and offers from town councils who wish to attract new inhabitants, offers of housing, the transfer of businesses and jobs in towns or regions which are suffering from depopulation. It also disseminates pleas from people who are looking for a place in the rural world to begin or modify their life projects. In short, it makes social media act as such: networks that connect people and towns to help reverse depopulation and rebalance the country, in terms of people, services, activities, infrastructures and political clout.

    Discussion on unsustainable fishing and its impact. What are the consequences of not fishing in our seas? We’ll be meeting up to discuss the impact that international fishing agreements are having and the advantages to local fishing. We will also find out how West Africa's coastal populations are facing over-exploitation of their maritime resources and what local-fish initiatives we have in Barcelona.

    A workshop on low energy consumption cooking, to provide ideas and tips for cooking while using as little energy as possible. Tackling the problem in a practical way, we encourage reflection on better food-use cooking and healthy, sustainable food. The workshop aims to provide participants with viable tools for furthering their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their food, opting for simple, but transformative, solutions. The workshop's objective, through various demonstrations as well as practical and theoretical advice, is to apply this in everyday life. It also fosters the culture of better food use and a complete, balanced diet. The workshop includes an explanation from an expert and the live preparation of various recipes.

  • Paisatges alimentaris
    Food landscapes. What if we learned at a very young age where the food we eat comes from?

    Exhibition

    In order to spark an interest in local and seasonal cuisine among the younger generations, an activity designed for kids was carried out, which consisted of creating a piece of artwork about the origins of food.
    Through a fun and creative activity, based on the collage technique, boys and girls from the Barcelona Metropolitan Area created a set of landscapes from the ingredients used to make different recipes. A collective imaginary, which introduced young children, in a playful, experimental and creative way, to the knowledge about our gastronomic culture, and at the same time, taught them the value of a healthy and sustainable diet.
    The art work can be seen on the Sustainable Food Week social media and also on the different screens set up at the different municipal markets.

In this case, the activity offers a special tasting of wines from periurban projects managed by L’Olivera: Vinyes de Barcelona (from the Finca de Can Calopa de Dalt, in Collserola) and Arraona Blanc i Negre (from the estate at Can Gambús, in the Sabadell Agricultural Park).

    A forum for agriculture, livestock farming, science and the academic world, as well as consumers, where people can meet, debate and establish a framework for cooperation which favours a transition towards resilient, healthy, fair and diversified food systems.
    A place where people can work on how to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequestrate carbon in food systems in order to counter and adapt to climate change.
