What is the environmental, social, and economic impact of your Agri-Food project? Now, you can find out more precisely thanks to huellaalimentaria.org, a platform promoted by the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology with the support of the Barcelona City Council. This platform helps food production, distribution, and consumption initiatives measure and communicate their impact accurately and accessibly.

A tool for moving towards more sustainable models

Food footprint refers to the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout food’s lifecycle—from production and processing to transport, consumption, and waste management. Considering that the global Agri-Food system is responsible for up to 37% of global emissions, understanding its impacts is essential to guiding the transition towards more sustainable and fairer models.

The new platform now provides access to 27 calculation and monitoring tools tailored to different types of projects and approaches.

Initiatives can identify which tool best suits their characteristics through a brief questionnaire, taking into account not only climate criteria but also social, economic, and health aspects.

Tailored for local projects

This resource is especially useful for local Agri-Food projects such as sustainable restaurants and school canteens, consumer cooperatives, markets, food waste reduction initiatives, or municipal healthy eating programmes.

All of these initiatives play a key role in transforming the food system, and thanks to this platform, they can access data that helps them make decisions, justify actions, or report to the city residents and authorities.

The impact is already visible in Barcelona

In the city, several initiatives have already calculated the benefits of supporting agroecology. For example, FoodCoop BCN annually reduces more than 1,500 kg of CO2eq by providing organic and locally sourced food to consumers.

Similarly, the Espigoladors Foundation avoids nearly 90 tonnes of CO2eq per year by rescuing food that would otherwise be wasted, or projects like the Healthier and More Sustainable School Canteens initiative, which contributes to a reduction of over 2,200 tonnes of CO2eq annually through responsible public procurement.

A further step in Barcelona’s commitment

The support for launching this platform is part of the Barcelona Challenge for Good Food and Climate, which promotes municipal action to transform food systems with a focus on planetary health. It is also aligned with the Barcelona Healthy and Sustainable Food Strategy 2030, which drives initiatives such as the Green Commerce programme, sustainable school canteens, and the promotion of local and organic public procurement.

With the new platform, Barcelona strengthens its support for initiatives leading the change locally, providing tools to move forward in an informed and impactful way.
