Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategic Plan (PEMB), is developing its first Sustainable Food Strategy, the outcome of which will be a shared roadmap on matters of food policy in the city for the coming eight years. The goal is to promote a framework for joint action to speed up the transition to a healthier, fairer and more sustainable food system, which boosts local and sustainable economies, combats inequalities and takes care of our own and the planet’s health. To this end, the strategy has various participation spaces. Now a citizen participation process is under way involving organisations and the general public in order to assess the work already carried out and provide additional input and project proposals.

This citizen participation process will take place between 4 May and 12 June. Registration for the seven sessions open to citizens is via decidim.barcelona, where input can also be made. Furthermore, eight topic-based meetings will also take place during this period with representatives of the food system to discuss some of the objectives identified in greater depth.

The sessions open to the public will cover the following topics:

  1. Our actions, our future: young people transforming the food system
    2. A diversity of food cultures: how is sustainable food articulated with the city’s cultural diversity?
    3. Food with social justice: how to guarantee the social and labour rights of people working in the food system?
    4. Global food justice: how to combat inequalities and power imbalances in the Global South food system?
    5. Food to confront the climate and ecological crisis
    6. Food in childhood: how can healthy and sustainable nutrition be guaranteed for children?
    7. Food allergies and intolerances: how to respond from the perspective of affected people?
    8. Let’s grow urban agriculture in the city!
